It’s been quite a while since my last post, mainly because Anne and I were asked to do blogs for Chevrolet throughout the 2010 season. I can say it has been a very busy year, but its finally beginning to wind down a little with only 3 events remaining. I have two tournaments in Texas and then wrap up the year in Missouri on Table Rock Lake.

The next event is a PAA Series on Lake Tawakoni, I place I’ve never heard of and know absolutely nothing about. After that we have two weeks off before the Texas Toyota Bass Classic on Lake Conroe, that one I do know something about, lol. We’re not real sure what we are doing between those two events yet, probably coming home though. I really wish these things were routed better, what a pain these last three are going to be. We’ve decided not to take the camper though because of the distance and all the miles. Anne made reservations at cabins for all of them, so it will be nice to all travel together at least.

I haven’t really had a monumental moment yet this year, but have cashed a good check in everything I’ve fished, so I’m happy with that. Don’t get me wrong, I still want to whack one out of the park though and I can’t wait to go for it in these final three derbies. I really like going to new places, so Tawakoni is one I definitely look forward to fishing.

A couple new baits on the sponsor front…first the new Rapala Crankin Rap. It kind of resembles a Wiggle Wart a little, but not really, lol. It is going to be a big hit for sure. I also got to try another prototype bait that Storm will be coming out with soon (hopefully). I wanted to keep it  because I feel it would have helped me at the Cup, but supposedly it was the only one that exsisted on this Earth, so I had to send her back. I can’t wait to get my hands on them for next season anyway. I’ll let you know when I can at least tell you what it is.

The new Kinami Bug is finally out, it’s named after me..yay! It’s called the D-Bug and I’ve already been catching them on it like crazy. I’ve always said that when it’s tough you can’t beat the Bug, and now it’s even better so make sure you check them out at a tackle store near you. Kinami also has a fluke type bait in the wings that I promise will be a must have. Not sure what it will be named (maybe the D-Shad, lol), but I used them at Norman and it has qualities none of the others have for sure. By far the best soft jerk bait ever!

I just finished up shooting the video for the Tabu Jigs, which will be available at Cabela’s hopefully soon. The sales of the Tiny Tim have been great at Cabela’s thus far, so we’re hoping the jig has the same results.

We have been spending most of our free time with my Grandma. She just got out of the hospital again for an infection and a little pneumonia. She’s in a home in Erie and has family with her almost all the time. She and Gramps have a lot to do with my success, they are the kind of people dreamers like me need to have in our lives in the beginning, rough times, ya know. Please add them to your prayer list.

Well Mitchell and I are going frog fishing.

Every angler has a story… In the summer of 2008, a few months after winning the Bassmaster Classic, a gentleman approached Yamaha Pro Alton Jones seeking an autograph. He handed Alton a baseball cap.

“If you could, please sign it,” the man requested, “To My Friend, Steve.”

Honoring the request much like hundreds of others, Alton placed his Sharpie on the cap and quickly signed his name. He talked with the man for a moment, thanked him for his support, and they both went their separate ways.

Today, Alton Jones is a household name on the Bassmaster Elite Series fishing tour. He is one of the most likeable personalities in bass fishing today. He exudes energy and enthusiasm. For many, he is a devout Christian role model. When fans approach seeking an autograph, they are greeted with a smile that often turns into conversation. The positive influence he has on others is a product of his faith, family, and friends.

The Fishing Buddy

Alton’s seed for fishing was first planted by his grandfather at an early age. He taught Alton how to fish, and from the age of five on, spent countless hours on the water with him.

Alton fondly remembers, “My grandfather was a very giving person and really poured into my life. Fishing was what he loved to do, and a lot of the time that we spent together turned out to be fishing. He liked to fish for Crappie – ‘White Perch’ as he used to call them. Although he didn’t fish for bass or enter tournaments, he signed me up for Bassmaster magazine when I was seven years old.”

His grandfather recognized Alton’s interest in fishing, and helped cultivate it. They made a ritual of traveling together nearly every weekend to a small, private lake about two hours east of Dallas, Texas. They were inseparable, enjoying both the fishing and each other’s company. Although Alton’s passion for the sport was obvious, what was not immediately apparent was his intrigue with fishing competition.

“With my grandfather’s help, I caught the bug early. I had already caught a few bass in my life, and Bassmaster was my first exposure to competitions called ‘tournaments’. By the time I was eleven or twelve, I was thinking, ‘Wouldn’t it be really cool to be like Bobby Murray, Bill Dance, or one of those guys that actually makes a living fishing?!’ So, the dream was alive at a very early age.”

Alton’s family also lived by several small lakes in East Texas. One in particular, a small, private lake within biking distance, was his favorite mid-week destination. The neighbor owning property surrounding the lake granted Alton access. He was an avid angler in his own right, and commonly stocked the lake with bass that he caught elsewhere.

“I can remember right there on Douglas Road, in the Park Cities area of Dallas, almost causing several car wrecks, hauling 4- and 5-pounders onto shore during rush hour. When fishermen would drive by, they would slam on the brakes and honk at me. I did that several times a week for a number of years. When you are young, a 5-acre lake is like Loch Ness – you don’t know what is living in there. So, there was always that mystique, a mythical dream, of a world record swimming around. Of course there was no chance that it could ever happen, but you couldn’t have convinced me otherwise.”

When Alton turned twelve, his parents gave him a 15-foot Kingfisher fiberglass boat with a 33-horsepower engine. When not fishing with his grandfather, Alton practiced the presentations he read about in his magazines.

“I taught myself how to fish a plastic worm. I didn’t really have anyone to show me how, so I would read about new techniques, go out, and do it. Part of the way I learned to do something right was to do it wrong.”

Each magazine issue helped to diversify his angling skill set. Through a process of trial and error, Alton learned elementary bass fishing techniques. The mechanics of casting, pitching, and flipping would also develop concurrently.

“I can remember a good Junior High friend of mine, Tom Blankenship, out-casting me with a new baitcasting reel. At the time, I was still using a push-button, spincasting type, and it drove me nuts that I didn’t know how to use one. So, the first thing I did when I got home that afternoon was to ask my mom for a baitcasting reel.”

On his birthday, Alton received his wish. He spent hours upon hours, practicing with his new reel. Less than one year later, he mastered the baitcaster and could cast further than Tom.

“I never liked to find something in fishing that someone could do better than I could. If I heard about a new skill or technique, I had to master it. I was never that way with anything else; I was just that obsessed with fishing.”

No Bass Boats at Baylor

Alton continued fishing recreationally throughout school without entering a single competition. In 1981, he registered as a student at Baylor University. Although he had a great love for the outdoors, he studied computer science in college. Alton’s parents financed his education on one condition: “No bass boats at school!” Their fear was that with a boat, Alton would be unable to focus on completing his studies.

“I could go fishing with anyone else in their boat, but I think my parents saw a train wreck coming if I were to actually own one. They knew that if I had a bass boat, school probably wasn’t going to be a top priority. And looking back, they were right.”

Alton learned that he had a knack for computers, and quickly recognized the opportunity to make money off of his acquired skills. Soon thereafter, he started a computer business. With a fresh source of income at his disposal, Alton immediately started saving for a down payment on a boat, despite his parents’ forewarning.

After acquiring a boat, Alton joined a Waco, Texas bass fishing club. The organization, one of the oldest in the country, provided him with the opportunity to compare his skills against other anglers. In his first tournament, Alton and his partner skunked.

“I came in to the weigh-in thinking, ‘Man, this was a tough day. I’d be surprised if anyone caught one!’ As it turned out, it was one of those days where everyone caught them. Everyone had a big stringer of fish except for me and my partner.”

Dejected, Alton dropped out of the club after one tournament. Within the cloud of disappointment, however, he discovered a silver lining.

“That was a powerful moment for me, because I had learned to fish primarily on private lakes. I was catching bass, but I had never considered the fact that you had to find them before you could catch them.”

For the next twelve months, Alton devoted his time to learning how to locate bass. He focused solely on one body of water, Tradinghouse Creek Reservoir. Alton’s tournament sabbatical allowed him to intently study bass behavior throughout the course of a year.

The following year, he rejoined the club. Out of a handful of tournaments, Alton won two. Wanting to fish for money, however, he again withdrew from club competition mid-season. He committed to fishing a select few central Texas tournament trails, including Angler’s Choice and Lone Star Bass, in addition to open tournaments over the next few years.

Jimmye Sue

While attending Baylor University, Alton met the love of his life, a nursing student named Jimmye Sue. They would marry in 1985, but Alton knew almost immediately that it was a match made in heaven. She was not only supportive of his dreams and aspirations, but she also shared and helped strengthen his Christian faith.

Four years after getting married, Jimmye Sue encouraged Alton to recommit to his quest to become a professional fisherman.

“At the time, I was fishing too much to be successful at the computer business and working too much to be successful at fishing. Jimmye Sue told me one day, ‘You have a dream to be a professional fisherman. You either need to be in the computer business, or you need to go fishing. I will support you either way.’ She really encouraged me to try the fishing thing because she did not want me to live with the regret of not giving it a shot. Now, that’s true love when your wife is telling you to quit your job and go fish!”

Despite the unconditional support of Jimmye Sue, Alton initially struggled. He felt that something was missing.

“God brought me to the place where I was pursuing this dream without Him. Financially, it was a big challenge. I was in debt. I remember Jimmye Sue and I praying together before we went to bed one night, and my prayer for the first time in my life was, ‘God, I want to follow You with my life, no matter what. Even if it means I never make another cast, I am going to follow You.’ Before that, I had always been willing to surrender every area of my life for Christ, except for my fishing because that was mine. I was holding onto it at all costs. But, He finally allowed me to reach the place in my life where I could open my hands and say, ‘God, this is Yours.’ I really thought He would take it away from me and have me pursue something else. To my surprise, He didn’t do that. He began to lead me toward fishing for His purposes.”

With faith, love, and commitment, Alton found peace in his professional pursuit. The taxing pressure to succeed lifted.

First Big Win

In 1990, after building success at the local level, he started fishing larger tournament circuits, including the newly-founded Red Man Golden Blend Pro-Am. It was the largest event that he ever considered entering.

“I had been fishing some regional tournaments over on Toledo Bend, and I heard that Golden Blend was coming there. I looked at the roster, and saw that there were a lot of big name pros – guys like Ken Cook, Denny Brauer, Rick Clunn, and Zell Rowland. They were all the names that I had read about, but never had a chance to rub elbows with. It was my first chance to fish against them, so I decided to enter the tournament.”

Defying the odds of competing successfully in his first professional event, Alton won and earned a $10,500 cash prize. It was the most prestigious victory in his young career.

“From that point, there was no turning back. The win allowed me to pay off some debt and save some money for entry fees and other expenses.”

Learning the Ropes

One year later, Alton fished the Bassmaster Invitational circuit and qualified for the Bassmaster Top-100 tour. While Alton fished the tour, Jimmye Sue worked fulltime as a nurse for the Veteran’s Administration. In 1992, they welcomed the birth of the first of three children, Alton Junior. Although the various demands and responsibilities of family life mounted, Alton steadily improved in competition and started to assemble a strong sponsorship team. Spiderwire became his first, and provided three-hundred dollars per month in financial support. Additional assistance from Yamaha, Skeeter, Pradco, and other companies soon followed. Alton’s tournament career transitioned from a losing financial venture into breaking even, and later into a profitable one.

During that time, Alton met Bruce Benedict, owner of a Dallas-based lure company. Bruce had extensive experience working with the media, and introduced Alton to several distinguished outdoor writers – the “Tim Tuckers” of the angling world. He took Alton under his wing, inviting him to participate in articles, photo shoots, product development, and other promotional activities.

“Before I even won a BASS event, I began to see my name appear in print. I realized right then the value of the media, and how important it is. Fishing is not like a lot of other sports where the media is a distraction to athletes with multimillion-dollar contracts. In fishing, the press that you generate is one of the things that will set you apart from other anglers. Learning the value of that is something a lot of guys still don’t get. I’m grateful for Bruce teaching me that.”

In addition to learning the ropes of sponsorship and media, Alton had to overcome the adjustment of learning the diverse assortment of waters he visited while on tour.

“I quickly realized that it was going to take time. I was going to have to learn how to fish tidal rivers, natural bodies of water, inland rivers, and even offshore structure, in order to become a competitive fisherman at the top level. I can remember the first time I went to the Potomac River – how I had my head handed to me on a platter there. It felt just like my first Waco bass club tournament.”

The Season of ‘97

Despite the intimidating learning curve, Alton faced each new year with patience and optimism. That approach lead to a steady improvement in Angler of the Year standings, leading up to his breakthrough season of 1997. With a Bassmaster Classic qualification and tour victory, Alton assembled the first of many future successful years.

“That season was the real turning point for me. I won the Top-100 on Lake Neely Henry and made my first Bassmaster Classic. My sponsorship support at that time was barely covering all of my expenses. After that, I had profit just from my sponsorships. I really realized from then on – as long as God continued to lead me in the direction – that I could fish successfully.”

The following year, Jimmye Sue, Alton Junior, Kristen, and Jamie Sue joined Alton on tour. They lived and traveled together as a family. Jimmye Sue resigned from her nursing position and started home-schooling the children on the road.

“For us, home became much more of where we were together as a family instead of our house in Waco, Texas. Life on the road had its challenges, but I would say the benefits far outweighed the sacrifices. It just really allowed me to completely focus on my fishing. I don’t believe that I could have been nearly as successful on the water if it were not for Jimmye Sue and the kids joining me.”

Over the next decade, with family in tow, Alton’s tour performance was the model of consistency. Even as a two-tour angler, he managed to qualify for three Bassmaster Classics and five Forrest Wood Cups in five years.

Classic Champ

In 2008, Alton won the Bassmaster Classic on Lake Hartwell, South Carolina. He experienced an exceptional practice leading up to the event. He even confided in Jimmye Sue that he was in a unique position to succeed, unlike his ten previous appearances.

Alton started the Classic well, amassing a 36-pound cumulative weight over the first two days of competition. He started Day 3, as the front runner, with a lead of 1-pound, 13-ounces. Alton felt the pressure of leading while on the water. His 13-pound, 7-ounce catch was lighter than the previous days’, and he did not know what others had caught. Doubt began to circulate within his mind, and his confidence waned.

“I idled into the marina thinking that I might have blown my chance. The only thing that made me think that I may have won was the ESPN helicopter hovering overhead. They spent the last 30 minutes of the day filming me – really getting in my way. That made me think, ‘Okay, maybe I am doing a little better than what I think I am.’”

That evening, Alton saw one of his childhood dreams come to fruition when he was declared the 2008 Bassmaster Classic Champion. He circled the Bi-Lo Center in his Skeeter, accompanied by his family. Fans applauded, and Alton’s larger-than-life smile grew even larger.

“It was an amazing, amazing experience – getting to share that with my family – the victory lap and holding the flag. It was absolutely wonderful.”

The day after winning the Bassmaster Classic, Alton received an unexpected phone call from a particularly notable bass fishing fan, President George W. Bush. The President invited Alton and his family to spend a day with him at the White House.

“President Bush really went out of his way to make me feel important and special. He was very attentive to my children, too, challenging them to make good decisions in their lives. That talk really stuck with my kids and me.”

Keep Fishing Fun

Alton believes that one of the keys to his Classic victory lied within observing a simple principle: Keep Fishing Fun! He believes that “fun” places, like Falcon Lake and Lake Amistad, where anglers can tangle with bass of gargantuan proportions, can be both challenging and rewarding. Most importantly, positive experiences help to keep passion for the sport – his job – at a high.

“It also helps me to learn and observe even more about the fish. The offseason before I won the Classic, for example, I was down at Lake Amistad and had figured out that the fish were relating to the dead, middle bottom of the creek channels. I had fished creek channels in the past, but never considered it a viable option in winter just because locating decent schools of fish that way is so hard to do. I put the creek channel pattern together that winter, never dreaming that I would duplicate it on Lake Hartwell without anyone else figuring it out.”

“To My Friend, Steve”

Since his Classic victory, Alton has had countless opportunities to speak with children, conduct fishing seminars, and entertain sport celebrities. On top of that, he reads each piece of fan mail. In the fall of 2008, Alton received a letter from the same gentleman whose baseball cap he had signed a few months after winning the Classic.

The letter read, “I am just writing you to thank you for the cap you signed for me. You did not know it at the time, but my friend Steve had cancer. Yesterday, he passed away. I want you to know that for the last month that he was in the hospital, when anyone would come to visit, he would get a big smile on his face, pick up the cap you signed for him, and say, ‘Look! I have a hat that a world champion fisherman signed just for me!’”

“When I signed that cap,” recalls Alton, “it was just another autograph. But, that letter made it so much more. It made me realize that you need to take seriously the few, brief chances you have with people because you never know how far-reaching it can be.”

For Elite Series professional Alton Jones, his journey from Joe to Pro, has admittedly become less about catching fish and more about reaching people. Ironically, he is influenced most by those that he seeks to influence in a positive way.

“There is nothing that feels as good as being able to make a difference. Through fishing, I have so many opportunities to do that. It’s amazing how just because you catch fish, you can bring hope and inspiration into someone else’s life.”

Alton on Fishing Buddies…

“I always had lots of friends, but only a handful of fishing buddies. To me, a fishing buddy is a more esteemed relationship than a friend. I am talking a true, died-in-the-wool, fishing buddy. They are a friend at the closest level. Together, you enjoy a passion on the water that strengthens friendship forever.”

Just finished up the Lake Norman FLW Tour event. That’s three down and three to go. I sit in 12th place in the AOY standings, which is my number one goal this season. I’m so thankful not to have blown it already. I was in 115th after the first day and Norman is the worst place to have to make a come back, so I was pretty worried. But I decided to gamble and get my jigs out and go shallow, even though I couldn’t get a bite on a jig in three days of practice. Well, to make a long story short, it all worked out well although it could have been so much better.

On the last day I lost a 4 pound class fish on a jump and then about a half hour later (15 minutes before I had to leave for check in) I broke off a 5-6 pounder. It will take forever to forget about that. I keep replaying it in my mind and I can’t sleep at night. There was obviously a bad spot in my line because I was shocked when the line broke. It should not have happened, I can get over losing the other big one because that stuff happens, but that giant should have gone across the stage with me and I’m extremely sick about it. I drew Dewayne, the owner of PJ’s Jigs on that day, who was a great guy to spend a day on the water with. He was a good counselor too…thankfully, I needed that. Should have 20 pounds, had to settle for 13.3.

I finished 12^th at Table Rock, which was our first tournament. The next event is on Fort Loudoun and Tellico Lakes. I really like fishing there, its got big smallmouth in it. The size limit on them is 18 inches, isn’t that nuts? Anyway I’m looking forward to that one. I finished 2^nd to Mark Davis a couple years ago and had the bites to do well the last time we were there. I think Lackie really likes that place too…I can’t remember how he faired in the actual tournaments, but he sure likes to show off during practice, lol. It will be fun for sure!

On the sponsor front there have been some exciting things taking place. We have finally decided on the new Kinami Bug. I saw the latest prototype this past week from Derek Yamamoto and I like it a lot. Basically, we lengthened the body, made it round like a senko, and added some texture to it. Subtle changes but it really improved the all around versatility of the bait. Now you can use a bigger hook if you want to, but still be able to cut it down to look more like it’s old self. I caught a key, much needed fish on Norman the last day with one, so it’s off to a good start already. It will be available this summer sometime and will be called the “D” Bug.

I haven’t heard much about my little Rapala Lefeb-Wii lately, other than things are moving forward and the game will be out soon. Can’t wait to play it. One other quick note on Rapala/ Storm…they have a new bait that I first saw a couple years ago at Falcon Lake, TX during a Rapala photo shoot, but up until lately I never actually tried. It’s called a Storm WildEye Pro Paddle Tail swimbait. If you see them anywhere, make sure you give them a fair try. They have the absolute perfect rigging system and the swimming action blows most of the others out of the water. I’m getting ready to order a ton of them after buying a pack at a local Gander Mountain at Lake Norman. The 4 ½ inch Olive Pearl is super nice, and they come in a 3 ½ inch version too.

I recently switched from Garmin to Lowrance GPSs. I’ve been with Garmin since I started fishing professionally back in 2003. I liked and believed in the products for sure, but over the last couple years they have begun to focus most of their attention on auto units, and who could blame them. They lost their FLW sponsorship a couple years ago and cut most of their pro staff, since then I feel the fishing units have suffered significantly. I felt it was time to move forward and support and promote a company that gives back to our industry. I put and HDS 10 on my dash and an HDS 8 on the front deck. Both have Structure Scan and Sirius weather which I’m still getting used to, but so far I love it. When Wendlandt switched a couple years ago from Garmin he told me the maps were way better too, he was right. I couldn’t be happier to be part of the Lowrance family and look forward to a long future.

8/18/10- Dave sits in 10th in the PAA AOY points after two events. He finished 15th on Lake Cherrokee, TN, and 24th at Lake Norman this passed week. The next event is at Lake Tawakoni, TX Sept 9-11th.

8/15/10- Dave finished 32nd in the Forrest Wood Cup and missed the cut by ounces. A 1 pound dead fish penalty accessed on day 2 cost him a birth into the top 30 cut for day 3. With that the 2010 FLW Tour season is over.

6/26/10- Dave finished the FLW Tour season 8th in the Tour AOY Standings with a 40th place effort on Lake Guntersville, AL. The PAA Tour season kicks off next week on Lake Cherokee, TN. The PAA Championship (Toyota Texas Bass Classic) will again be held this October on Lake Conroe, TX, where Dave will defend his 2009 title.

5/29/10- Another solid finish for Dave on the 4th stop on the FLW Tour at Lake Ouachita, AR. He moves up to 9th in the Tour AOY Standings with his 30th place effort. Only one event remains for the 2010 FLW season, Lake Guntersville, AL next month.

4/25/10- Dave finish 32nd at Fort Loudoun and Tellico Lakes this past weekend. He remains 11th in the FLW Tour AOY Standings with only two events to go. The next event is May 26-29 on Lake Quachita, AR. An FLW Tour AOY is still a strong possibility for 2010!

3/29/10- Dave rallied to finish 36th at Lake Norman. He now sits tied for 11th in the FLW Tour AOY Standings at the half way point. The next event is April 21-24 on Tellico Lake where Dave finished 2nd a couple years ago.

3/8/10- Dave was interviewed by KOLA New Channel 10 during the second morning of the Table Rock Tournament. To watch it click here!

3/6/10- Dave finished 12th in the FLW Tournament on Table Rock Lake. This was the season opener, so he’s off to a great start. The next event is in North Carolina on Lake Norman, March 24-27.

2/19/10- The FLW Tournament on Table Rock Lake begins tomorrow. Watch the live weigh-in on FLW Live starting at 2:30 pm CST. Good luck Davey Boy!

2/19/10- Welcome to my new site! The first FLW Tour event will be held on Table Rock Lake, MO in a couple weeks from now. I cannot wait to get out on the water and run my new SHO!!!

2/9/10- FLW canceled the season opener on the Red River, LA. due to high, cold water and bad weather. They made the right call, it was a recipe for disaster. We now have a 5 event season starting at Table Rock Lake, MO the last week of February.

2/4/10- The FLW Tour kicks off on the Red River in Bossier City, LA on Feb 10th. Dave arrived for official practice which begins on Feb 6th. Stay tuned for updates right here on DLC, and don’t forget to watch the first FLW  Tour weigh-in of 2010 on FLW Live.

10/19/09- Dave won his first major championship over the weekend, the Toyota Texas Bass Classic. Full coverage of this exciting event will air on CBS Sports Spectacular at 2:00 pm EST, on November 21st.

10/17/09- Dave extends his lead in the PAA Toyota Texas Bass Classic to more than 5 pounds, with 36-12. The top 10 compete tomorrow and will check in at 3:30 pm CST. More Info.

10/16/09- Dave’s hot streak continues. He sits in 1st place after day 1 of the PAA Championship with a whopping 24-8lb limit. The full 60 man field fishes tomorrow while only the top 10 fish on Sunday. 1st place in this event is $250,000. More Info.

9/29/09- Dave finished the 2009 season in strong fashion with a top 10 in in all three AOY races, 7th on the FLW Tour, 2nd on the FLW Series, and 5th in the Stren Series. Only two events remain, the PAA Championship on Lake Conroe, TX to be aired on CBS, followed by the Stren Championship on Pickwick Lake, AL to be aired on Versus.

8/16/09- Dave’s next event is the third Stren on Lake Champlain, NY next weekend, followed by the final FLW Series event at Clarks Hill, GA. His lead in the Stren AOY race is 1 point and he leads the Series points by 32 points!

8/16/09- Dave finishes 4th place at Lake Dardanelle, AR making this his 4th consecutive top 10 taking over the Angler of the Year race with one tournament to go! Way to go Dave!

8/13/09- Dave now sits in 9th place with 18-03 lbs for two days. Watch the live weigh-in from Lake Dardanelle, AR tomorrow starting at 2:30 pm Central Time. Dave checks in at 2:45 tomorrow and will need around 9 lbs to make his 5th top 10 cut this season.

8/3/09- Dave finished 8th at the Forrest Wood Cup yesterday in Pittsburgh, PA, and is probably taking a long nap right about now. Look for a full recap of that event comming soon right here on DLC. He will begin official practice this Friday on Lake Dardanelle, AR for the third FLW Series tournament of the season.

7/18/09- Not too shabby for no practice. Dave finished 19th in the Stren event at 1000 Islands, NY, and now leads the Northern Division points with two events remaining. This year’s Stren Championship takes place on Pickwick Lake, AL, a place Dave has done well over the years. The next event is the $1 BLK_PAA Forrest Wood Cup in Pittsburgh. Practice begins this coming Saturday.

7/13/09- Dave finished 6th in the final regular season event at Lake Champlain, NY and ended the FLW Tour season ranked 7th in the Angler of the Year race. Pittsburgh…here we come!!! Dave will compete in the Stren event on 1000 Islands starting this Thursday, the 16th. You can watch the live weigh-in starting at 2:30 pm EST by Clicking here!

7/11/09- Dave made the top 10 in the final FLW event on Lake Champlain. Tomorrow is the final day, and he sits about 6 pounds from the leader in 8th place with 12-5 pounds. Dave also officially qualified for the Forrest Wood Cup in Pittsburgh, PA in three weeks for a crack at $1 million dollars!

6/27/09- Dave finished in 3rd place in the first Northern Stren event on the Potomac River, stating that another tournament competitor’s desperation cost him a near guaranteed win. The next Stren tournament is at 1000 Islands, NY on 7/16-7/18, immediately following the Tour event on lake Champlain.

6/26/09- Dave leads the field going into the final day of the Stren Series tournament on the Potomac River by a little over a pound. Weights will carry over into tomorrow’s final day. 6/12/09- Dave continues to climb the FLW Tour point standings with only one event remaining. He now (unofficially) sits in 21st place after a 16th place effort today on Kentucky Lake. The last tournament is next month on Lake Champlain, NY.

5/14/09- The Beaver lake curse may finally be broken! Dave finished 28th with a two day total of 18-12lbs earning more of those valuable points toward the Forrest Wood Cup in Pittsburgh. Only two events now remain on the FLW Tour, Kentucky Lake and then Lake Champlain, two of Dave’s favorite places.

5/14/09- Today was day 1 of the FLW Tour event on Beaver Lake. Dave weighed 9-8lbs and sits in 42nd place. He goes out in boat #1 tomorrow after being the last boat (#155) today, and will weigh in at 3:00pm. Dave will need about 8-8lbs to make the top 50 and a little over 12lbs to make the top 10 cut. 4/24/09- Dave made a big move today in the standings, jumping 50 places to finish 61st, and collect valuable points toward the Forrest Wood Cup this August in Pittsburgh, PA. He missed a check by only 3 ounces. The next FLW Tour event is on Beaver Lake, a definite sore spot for Dave over the years. Look for his Audio Recap from Norman coming soon!

4/23/09- In 111th sits a very disappointed Dave in a three way tie with Ron Shuffield and Tom Mann Jr. He will need around 12lbs tomorrow to get into the top 50 which he easily exceeded every day in practice. Dave goes out in boat 104 tomorrow and checks in at 4:00 pm. Click here to watch live!

4/12/09- HAPPY EASTER! Dave ended the PAA event at Neely Henry right were he started, in 114th place. After a short Easter break, Dave hits the tournament trail again when the FLW Tour heads to Lake Norman, April 23-26. Look for his pre-tournament video right here on DLC on the 22nd!

4/10/09- After day 1 of the PAA Event on Lake Neely Henry, AL, Dave sits in 114th place with 7.38 lbs. Day 2 of the event has been canceled due to severe thunderstorms. 4/8/09- The PAA Event on Lake Neely Henry, AL starts tomorrow and the you can watch the weigh-in live! Activities will be starting around 3:00 Central time on Thursday, April 9th. Visit the PAA Website.

4/4/09- Dave finished 5th in the FLW Series event on Lake Eufaula, AL and surpassed the million dollar mark in career earnings! We will announce the winner of the autographed jersey contest soon. Dave’s audio recap from Eufaula will also be posted shortly. The next event is a PAA Series tournament on Lake Neely Henry starting next Thursday, the official practice period begins tomorrow.

3/13/09- Dave finished the Table Rock in 40th place and is still short of the $1 BLK_PAA! So for those of you who picked Dave to reach the million in three events….almost, but you’re out! The next FLW event is a Series on Lake Eufaula, AL. Dave’s recap of the Table Rock event is coming soon!

3/12/09- Dave sits in 36th after a snowy day 1 at Table Rock Lake. He weighed in a 15-9lb limit and will need around 18lbs tomorrow to have a shot at the top 10 cut! The top 50 should be around 28lbs after tomorrow’s weigh-in. Dave weighs in at 3:15 pm, click here to watch live!

2/13/09- Happy Valentines Day. I suck!!! Sorry, but this event was a tough one to swallow. I had the fish to the boat to be leading over the last two days, and 94th is just sickening. What a waste of an opportunity, I lost 39 fish today and roughly 20 yesterday, we counted today. Total bad luck. Sorry to those of you who picked me on your Fantasy Teams.

2/12/09- Dave had a much tougher day than expected with only 3 bass weighing 9-08. He goes out in boat 54 tomorrow and needs a huge day to get back in it. Watch the live weigh-in on FLW Live starting at 3:00 Central.

2/11/09- Dave will take off in boat number 102 on day 1 at Guntersville, and will check in at 4:00 PM Central Time. Don’t forget to watch the live weigh-in on FLW Live starting at 3:00 Central.

11/28/08-Dave’s 2008 season is over. After a dismal season on the FLW Tour he managed to finish 2nd in the Cup and then follow that up with a 4th place AOY finish in the FLW Series and a 2nd in the Northern Stren Series AOY. Look for a complete season re-cap coming soon!

11/6/08-Dave finished lucky 13th in the Stren Series Championship. Yes, a good finish, but unfortunately “Ike” made the top ten cut in 9th place and clinched an early 09 Forrest Wood Cup birth to beat Dave by a mere 11 ounces. So Dave is off to Falcon Lake, TX for the FLW Series Fish-Off for a second crack at qualifying for the 09 Cup in Pittsburgh.

11/5/08-After day 1 at Table Rock, Dave sits in 12th place, but more importantly, he leads all anglers from the Stren Northern Division. If Dave can maintain that position, he will qualify for next year’s Forrest Wood Cup in Pittsburgh, his main goal. Dave is boat 174 tomorrow and checks in at 3:50 pm. 10/18/08-The FLW Series wraps up next week on Clarks Hill Lake. Dave missed two days of practice due to the last tournament but is looking forward to grinding it out on this tough fishery. Dave sits in 9th in the AOY standings and needs to stay in the top 30 to qualify for the FLW Series Fish-off on Falcon Lake in Texas, where he’ll have another early shot at an 09 Cup Birth.

10/17/08-With a 17lb sack on the final day, Dave placed 13th in the last Northern Stren event on the Potomac River and finished in 2nd to “Ike” in the final AOY standings. The two, along with 38 other Northern Division qualifiers will go head to head in the Stren Series Championship on Table Rock Lake competing for an early birth into the 2009 Forrest Wood Cup in Pittsburgh. They say all good things must come to an end, but I like to think there’s always something better around the corner.

As you know, my six year relationship with Kellogg’s recently came to an end, but as a result I was asked to join the Chevy Team. Though I had a wonderful time promoting the Keebler brand over the years, I’m now looking forward to moving in a totally new direction and beginning a fresh season with Chevy Trucks.

My very first vehicle was a 77 Chevy Blazer given to me as a birthday present from my parents when I turned 16. Oddly, they bought it from my future wife’s (Anne) older brother, who modified it into a wooden short bed with a huge lift and 33’ mags. I came home from school one day and there it sat in the driveway with the stereotypical big red bow across the hood. Anne was only 12, but she remembers riding with me to church in that old cherry red hot rod. If it weren’t for that truck, Anne may have been spared the life of wife of a professional angler, lol.

As far as being added to the Chevy Team, I’m humbled and honored to say the least. I am now the low man on the totem pole, surrounded by legends, my heroes in the sport. Luke Clausen, although younger than I, was someone who I looked up to before I became a pro, and just look what he’s done since then. All the others have Tour AOY titles, Classic and Forrest Wood Cup wins. I have several other unique ties to the team as well. Anthony, of course, is a partner in Tabu Tackle, Larry is a fellow Rapala Pro, I get to rub shoulders with Dion at the campgrounds on occasion, and I saw Jay Yelas at a restaurant once.

You could say the Chevy team is “stacked” and I’m anxiously looking forward to the challenge ahead of me of promoting and representing such a high profile company. There is a reason all the service crews drag those heavy trailers around the country with Chevy Trucks and I’m looking forward to finding that out for myself.

NEW SITE

As you can see we have totally redesigned my website, simplifying and making it more user friendly. Social networking is becoming more important in this day and age, so we will be experimenting with various ways to keep you informed through Twitter, FaceBook, and Locker Blogger. Video has always been a big part of DLC and we do plan on offering some this season as well, although most likely not as much as in the past.

NEW ATTITUDE

It should be a fun and exciting year on the Tour for sure. The season almost kicked of on the Red River, LA  but due to high water and dangerous conditions the first Tour event of 2010 was canceled. I have already qualified for the Cup on Lake Lanier, GA this Fall through the FLW Series so that is always a nice feeling going into the new year.

I will be fishing the FLW Tour and then the PAA Series later in the Year. I’m still undecided on the Stren and Series events. I may hit one or two of them in the gaps, we’ll see when the time comes. Regardless, I have a fresh attitude for 2010 and am hoping the momentum from last year will carry over to the new year.
