If you looked at the big-bass standings from the recent Champlain Eastern FLW Series, you saw that the 7-02 pig Dave Lefebre caught on day 1 was the top fish of the tournament. Turns out he caught it on a bait he wasn’t even supposed to be fishing.
In Lefebre’s own words, here’s the story behind that massive largemouth:
“That 7-02 was the first fish I caught on the first day. I found that spot on my last day of practice up north and knew it had big-fish potential, although I didn’t get bit there.
“It was a small patch of milfoil on the tip of a point in about 12 feet (of water). I was on my way to my largemouth area up north and figured I’d stop and hit it real quick as I was passing it.
“I caught it on a prototype Tabu Super Finesse series 5/32-ounce jig. It was black and blue with a matching Kinami Bug trailer. It’s funny, I got the jigs in the day before I left for the tournament and only got three – one of each size. I was not supposed to use them, they were to use in photo shoots and to show off only, but, well, I couldn’t resist. I’d say it was worth it, eh?
“I ended up catching well over 50 bass on that jig that day and amazingly never lost it to a pike. The jig will be coming out early next spring.”
The big fish anchored his 20-11 bag on day 1 and he went on to post a 16th-place finish.
