Fish Of A Lifetime!

June 17, 2008

I had the pleasure to spend a couple days on the water with my friends from FLW Outdoors, Aaron Hall and Dave Mahler. The fishing was really good and the three of us boated 259 bass in two days, a mixture of largemouth and Smallmouth from Presque Isle Bay in Erie, PA. On the third morning we were able to venture out on the Lake Erie for a couple of hours before they had to catch flights out of Cleveland. It was windy and a bit rough, but Dave managed to hook into this gigantic Smallmouth and get it in the boat without much problem, thanks in small part to Aaron’s net job (ha ha ha).

The spot we were fishing has been a good place for big fish in the past. Last year I took Matt Herren there and caught several 5 and 6 pound fish, and before that, Alton Jones and Alton Jr put three toads in the boat from that same place, two 6 lb 8 oz beauties and a 6 lb 10 oz beast. However, Mahler’s fish is the biggest I’ve ever seen from there. Ironically, that was the only fish we caught out there that day, but if you’re only going to get one, well…that’s the one you want. I’m just thankful nothing went wrong and we were able to land it after a couple of really big jumps and runs under the boat.

We quit fishing early to take the fish to the PA Fish Commission Office on Walnut Creek. There, they weighed and measured it and issued Dave an Pennsylvania Angler Award. It weighed 6 pounds 12 ounces, was 22 inches long, and had a massive 17 inch girth. After calling a local Taxidermist, Dave instead decided to have a replica of the fish made and release her back into the lake. It was really awesome to watch that big fish swim off so casually. It was a good feeling for all of us.

That fish made an even 260 for the three days! Aaron’s biggest fish of the outing was never weighed, but it was over 20 inches and at least 5 1/2 pounds. It was an enjoyable trip and I hope they can come back up to Erie and do it again someday . We will be posting video of Dave releasing the fish soon, so be sure to check it out.
