Today was the first day of practice on Lewis Smith Lake, the second FLW Tour stop, so practice video updates are on the way. This is the busiest part of the whole season with tournaments going on back to back for the next few weeks. I fished in the first round of Ultimate Match Fishing last week which caused me to miss two days of practice for the Wheeler Lake FLW Series, then I fished Wheeler and finished 59th, now I’m at Lewis Smith and then I’m going to Lake Fork, TX which will only give me one day to practice for the 3rd FLW Tour event on Lake Norman, NC. After that…a little breather and I already can’t wait for that.
I wish I could talk about the Ultimate Match Fishing Show last week, but you’ll have to wait until August when the show airs on the Outdoor Channel. I think it’s one of the best, most entertaining fishing shows on TV, so watch for that later this summer.
Wheeler was a tough finish to swallow. I only got a day and a half to practice but I found an area that was loaded with fish in the last afternoon of practice. During the actual tournament, I just lost too many fish, especially on day 3. I should have weighed at least 18 pounds, but the big ones kept getting off. I lost three fish in the 3 1/2 to 4 lb range. I was throwing a variety of super shallow fat crankbaits, including a brand new Rapala wake bait that is going to be a huge hit this year for sure. The fish just weren’t getting the bait good, even the ones I caught were hooked funny, some even on the top of the head…strange. It simply wasn’t meant to be for me, I lost a 5 plus lber on the second day too. It was quite surprising to see the weights at that event, that was unbelievable for Wheeler. I’m glad to get out of there with a decent finish though and get some good points toward the AOY standings. The top 30 will again qualify for the East-West Fish-off in November, site to be announced.
Well, I have to get up early and find some big fish. I’ll probably post again during the PAA Texas Classic in a couple weeks.
