Dock Post 6/29/08
June 20, 2008
I just finished up with the 5th FLW Tour tournament of the year with only one remaining before the championship in August. My drought continued with a miserable 125th place finish on Tellico Lake. Although I stunk it up again, I really did find an area that the event could have been won. On day one the conditions were as wrong as could be and the Smallmouth just didn’t bite. On day two they were biting, but things just didn’t go my way. I should have had 23 plus pounds and been culling 4 pounders in the first 45 minutes, but hey…it’s just not meant to be I guess.
There’s really not much new going on. Anne, the kids, and I are home now for a couple weeks before heading over to Detroit for the last event of the season. Harbortown RV Resort is where we stay and is only about 3 1/2 hours from our house. I can tell you that I will be practicing to make a super long run in this one, like usual, but this time if the weather is even close to being questionable, I will not be taking any crazy chances, risking my life, or my equipment in this tournament. Last year I spent a couple hours pre-fishing in Cleveland on my way to Detroit and found the “Mother Load”. I did make it there during the first day of the tournament, but could only fish for 20 minutes. I put 4 of the right kind in the boat that weighed 15 1/2 pounds and lost the 5th one at least 5 times including one over 5 pounds on the first cast. I just ran out of time and absolutely had no choice but to leave when I did. It literally took 3 1/2 hours to get there and a little more to get back…loads of fun! My poor co-angler. We got to the check in boat with under 1 minute remaining…unbelievable!!! The second day I just went to St. Clair and caught 17 1/2 pounds. I finished 36th in that one, about 5 pounds from the top 10.
There are a bunch of new products coming out from several of my sponsors, but they are going to be introducing them at the I-Cast Show in a couple of weeks, so I don’t want to spill the beans. Rapala and Mizmo especially both have some awesome new products coming soon. Like I mentioned before, keep your eyes open for that new double tail grub from Yamamoto too. All others are about to become obsolete, it’s that good.
We just had a new addition to the Kelloggs team last week. Greg Bohannan from Rogers, AR will be running the Pop Tarts boat for the rest of the year and next season. He is a really good fisherman and all around nice guy who will add a spark to the team. He definitely needs to work on his ping pong though (ha, ha, ha). If I can remember how to catch fish, next year the Kellogg’s Team will get back to the top where it was two and three years ago. Kim Bain is no longer a part of the team. She is focusing on the WBT events and I think is doing very well over there, so good luck to her.
That’s all I know. We are getting ready for my son, Mitchell’s 6 year birthday party this afternoon. Hard to believe. I have to get to work before everyone starts showing up, so I will talk to you after Detroit. By the way, I would not advise picking in your Fantasy Fishing picks in this one, simply based on how the year has gone so far. I really want to win so bad and I may do well, but there’s always someone else to replace my name with. I said in one of my last videos that I was getting death threats, but just to let you know, I was exaggerating. Everyone has been super encouraging and understanding, I was just joking around.
Thanks for all the positive emails as I struggle through this crazy season. They mean a lot to me.
See ya!
Dave
